Information for Carers

As a practice we recognise that a lot of our patients are caring for a relative or friend and often do not regard themselves as a ‘carer’.

We keep a register of all our patients who are carers and whom they are caring for.
We are keen to know if you are in this position as we understand the particular problems that this role can bring. It is important to look after your health too. Please make sure that you register as a carer with your GP, as this will help the practice staff to understand the pressure you face and they can help you to obtain the support you need.

Who is a Carer?

Carers are people who without payment, provide help and support to a family member, friend or neighbour who cannot manage on their own due to physical or mental illness, disability, substance misuse or frailty brought on by old age. Caring roles can include administering medication, lifting, moving and handling, personal or emotional care.

Who is a Young Carer?

Young carers are carers under the age of 18. The person receiving the care is often a parent, but may be a sibling, grandparent or other relative that may need support.
The term carer would not apply if the person is:

• A paid carer
• A volunteer from a voluntary agency
• Anyone providing personal assistance for payment either in cash or kind

A carer’s information pack is available from Reception.
